Materials, and what they actually change

Nylon and plastic stems are light, cheap and forgiving — they flex rather than snap, and they're the only sensible choice if you use L-Style moulded flights. Aluminium is rigid and holds a flight firmly, but bends and can seize onto a barrel. Carbon is the durable premium option — light, strong and resistant to going crooked. Spinning stems let the flight rotate so an incoming dart slides past instead of knocking it out.

Length changes more than you'd think

Shortening the stem moves the flight closer to the barrel, reducing drag and typically flattening the dart's path; a longer stem does the opposite and steepens the landing angle. It's the cheapest way to change how a dart flies without buying new barrels, and worth experimenting with before you conclude the barrel is wrong.

▶ Will any shaft fit my darts?

Almost certainly — 2BA is the standard thread across the vast majority of steel-tip darts, and everything here uses it.

▶ What length should I start with?

Medium is the sensible default. If your darts land nose-up or you want a flatter trajectory, try shorter; if they nosedive, go longer.

▶ Are spinning shafts worth it?

They can reduce deflections when you group tightly, because the flight rotates out of the way rather than being struck square. Whether you notice depends on how close your darts land.

▶ Why do my shafts keep breaking?

Usually tight grouping — another dart striking the stem. Spinning stems, carbon shafts or a system with a protective ring all help; so does moving your grouping off the exact same spot.
